2026 World Cup: The Final Countdown
The buzz in North America is reaching a crescendo as host cities finalize their preparations.
- Host City Initiatives: In April, the New York City Council introduced major legislation to prepare for the tourism boom, including the co-naming of streets like “Thierry Henry Way” in Manhattan and “Pelé Way” in Queens.
- National Team Form: The March international window provided a sobering reality check for the USMNT. While Mexico has shown resilience against European opposition (winning against Turkey and drawing with Germany recently), the U.S. has struggled, dropping matches to the likes of Belgium (5-2) and Switzerland (4-0).
- Group Stage Teasers: With the draw cycles concluding, the U.S. is eyeing a potential group clash with Turkey or Kosovo, while Mexico awaits a showdown with either Denmark or the Czech Republic.
European Football: Champions League Chaos
April is famously the “month of the quarterfinals” in Europe, and the 2025/26 campaign has not disappointed.
UEFA Champions League (Men’s)
The quarterfinals just wrapped up on April 15-16 with some heavyweight results:
- Bayern Munich edged out Real Madrid in a 4-3 thriller at the Allianz Arena, cementing their status as the current #1 ranked club in UEFA’s coefficient.
- Paris Saint-Germain showed clinical form, dismissing Liverpool with 2-0 wins in both legs.
- FC Barcelona and Atlético Madrid engaged in a gritty all-Spanish affair; while Barça won the second leg 2-1, Atlético’s 2-0 first-leg win kept the aggregate tension high.
Premier League & Coefficient Race
In England, the title race is coming down to the wire. As of April 19, Manchester City remains a juggernaut, recently crushing Chelsea 3-0 at Stamford Bridge. Meanwhile, the race for the “European Performance Spots” is heating up, with England and Spain leading the rankings to earn extra Champions League spots for next season.
American Soccer: MLS & NWSL
While the World Cup looms, Major League Soccer (MLS) is currently in the thick of its regular season.
- The Whitecaps’ Historic Start: The Vancouver Whitecaps are the story of the spring. Following a 3-0 win over Sporting KC on April 17 featuring a goal from legendary veteran Thomas Müller—Vancouver sits atop the league with 21 points and a staggering +18 goal differential.
- Inter Miami Watch: Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami continues to be a massive draw, recently pulling off a 3-2 comeback victory against the Colorado Rapids in front of a packed Empower Field at Mile High.
- San Diego FC Debut: The league’s newest club, San Diego FC, is finding its footing in its inaugural season, though they recently suffered a 2-1 loss to Minnesota United at Snapdragon Stadium.
Women’s Champions League (UWCL)
The women’s game is seeing a shift in power as we head into the semi-finals.
- Barcelona Femení remains the gold standard, having absolutely dismantled Real Madrid 6-0 in the quarterfinals (12-2 on aggregate).
- The Semi-Final matchups are set for late April: Bayern Munich vs. Barcelona and Arsenal vs. Lyon.
